MEET US BY THE FIRESIDE: KNOCKENGORROCH X GG

January 13, 2025

Meet us by the fireside! A festival partnership, a Celtic celebration of music and nature

This partnership is a collaboration between two of the UK’s longest-running festivals  - The Green Gathering and Knockengorroch in Scotland.  We want to encourage festival lovers to support homegrown music, culture and the nurturing environment small festivals provide.

'Meet us by the fireside' is a symbol of solidarity and resilience in economically challenging times. We're offering discounts to festival-goers attending both events – a unique opportunity to support grassroots music and experience two very authentic gatherings.

Celtic Roots, Shared Values

Knockengorroch (Galloway, SW Scotland)  and Green Gathering (Chepstow, Welsh borders) have much in common, including an eclectic mix of global, folk and dance music, free workshops aimed at keeping alive vital heritage skills, community spirit in abundance, and chance to explore areas of natural beauty with historic and environmental significance.

In 2025, Knockengorroch is focused on music, language and land, with a theme of survival ... The Green Gathering centres off grid living, nature connection, and the power of art and music to bring about positive change. These Celtic festivals provide platforms for upcoming talent, and fertile spaces to tell stories about what really matters.

Em Weirdigan, Green Gathering director, says:
“With the survival of grassroots festivals in jeopardy, this is the year to come along and meet us by the fireside in Scotland and in Wales! Our festivals have heaps in common, providing joyous life-changing moments through immersion in music, connection with nature, friendly campfires and community spirit. We're hoping to raise awareness of our shared passions, and learn from our relative strengths - Green Gathering being the UK's most sustainable festival, and Knockengorroch being rooted in the lands, history and culture of its unique site.”

Why Grassroots Festivals Matter

As rising costs and funding cuts continue to strain the arts sector, grassroots festivals are a beacon of creativity and connection. Knockengorroch and Green Gathering are not-for-profit events with loyal audiences whose members frequently say “this festival changed my life!” That’s not hyperbole – research carried out by A Greener Future shows that The Green Gathering inspired over a third of attendees to change their behaviour, with 20% reporting the festival had influenced them to become more engaged in community activities and campaigns.

The call to ‘meet us by the fireside’, speaks to resonant themes of survival and community, in what the Association of Independent Festivals describes as “a devastating period for the UK’s festival organisers”, during which financial pressures caused 72 festivals to cancel, postpone or cease to exist in 2024.

The Call to Gather

Green Gathering and Knockengorroch organisers are celebrating their determination to thrive through Celtic collaboration, inviting folk from across these lands to join them.

‘Meet us by the fireside’ is more than a metaphor; it’s an invitation to reconnect with music, land, and community. By attending both festivals, supporters can experience the magic of ‘Knock n Green’
