Flood Resilient Environments and Communicating Consequences

This talk discusses the key principles of flood resilient design and a range of novel approaches for communicating consequences and influencing behaviour change. It begins by exploring the impact and pertinence of flooding and moves on to explore strategies for adaptation and resilience at the catchment, community and property scale. Throughout the talk worked examples are use explain the purpose behind each approach and how/where to apply them.

Dr  Ed Barsley, designer, author, and artist, is an expert in environmental design focusing on resilience strategies for communities and the environment. His award-winning trans-disciplinary practice, The Environmental Design Studio  (TEDS) designed the Flood Resilient Garden at Chelsea Flower Show in 2024 and previously won the Sunday Times 'Resilient Home' competition with their design of the 'Home for All Seasons'. Ed's book 'Retrofitting for Flood Resilience: A Guide to Building & Community Design' was published by RIBA in 2020. He has delivered keynotes at international climate conferences, run RIBA's flood resilient design lecture series, and a variety of Research Council-funded studies, including his Cambridge PhD on climate resilient environments.
